Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Helping You Breathe Easier

We all want to live life to its fullest. Unfortunately, if you suffer from chronic lung problems, such as asthma, emphysema or chronic bronchitis, you may be unable to participate in the physical activities you enjoy. At Charlotte Regional Medical Center, our pulmonary rehabilitation program can help you lead a healthier, more active life through a supervised exercise and education program.

We'll help you to better understand your condition, and our pulmonary rehab specialists will help you condition your lungs, heart and major muscles. With improved health, you'll spend less time worrying about lung disease and more time enjoying life.

Joining Our Program

You will need a referral from a physician to join the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Charlotte Regional Medical Center. If you do not have a physician or would like more information about the physicians in this area, please call Nurse Connect at 637-2497 for a free, confidential physician referral. Under your physician's orders, our pulmonary rehab team will evaluate the extent of your lung disease and develop a program to meet your specific medical needs. This evaluation can be performed while you are in the hospital or on an outpatient basis. Before you begin your rehab program, our team will review the results of your evaluation and confer with you and your physician about reaching your goals.

Our Qualified Staff

The pulmonary rehabilitation team at Charlotte Regional Medical Center is committed to helping you reach your goals. Our team consists of a physician who specializes in pulmonary medicine, a respiratory therapist, and exercise physiologist, a registered nurse, an occupational therapist and a dietitian.

Your Path To Better Health

Your personalized program will consist of three primary components — evaluation, education and exercise.

Our team will evaluate you initially and throughout the program to monitor your progress and make program adjustments as needed. Our comprehensive education program is designed to help address your questions and concerns about lung disease and to provide techniques for improving the quality of your life. Among the topics we cover are: the healthy and diseased lung, proper breathing, medications, work simplification, diet, travel and environment.

When you begin the exercise component of our program, you will be carefully supervised by a member of our team. In fact, our facilities are equipped for continuous monitoring of your heart and lungs through our sophisticated telemetry system. Hour-long exercise sessions will be scheduled three times a week for eight to 12 weeks. Your primary care physician is informed regularly of your progress.

Educational and exercise sessions are offered in the Wellness Center located at 733 East Olympia Ave. Punta Gorda, directly across the street from Charlotte Regional Medical Center. Lockers and showers are provided for your convenience.

And The Beat Goes On

Your progress should continue even after you have completed the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Charlotte Regional Medical Center. Our team will assist you by developing a maintenance program to be followed at home and/or in our well-supervised Wellness Center gym.

As a graduate of the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, you will be offered a discounted membership at our Wellness Center. This membership entitles you to use of the facilities and equipment, as well as participation in member programs and activities.

Covering Costs

Most of the cost of pulmonary rehabilitating is reimbursed by Medicare and/or other insurance companies. If you are covered by a private insurance company, we recommend that you contact your insurance carrier to verify coverage. Our financial counselors will be glad to assist you with any questions or concerns.
